Whole-Stack Analysis and Optimization of Commercial Workloads on Server Systems

چکیده
The evolution of the Web as an enabling tool for e-business introduces a challenge to understanding the execution behavior of largescale middleware systems, such as J2EE [2], and their commercial workloads. This paper presents a brief description of the whole-stack analysis and optimization system – being developed at IBM Research – for commercial workloads on Websphere Application Server (WAS) [5] – IBM’s implementation of J2EE – running on IBM’s pSeries [4] and zSeries[3] server systems.

Solaris Zones: Operating System Support for Consolidating Commercial Workloads
Server consolidation, which allows multiple workloads to run on the same system, has become increasingly important as a way to improve the utilization of computing resources and reduce costs. Consolidation is common in mainframe environments, where technology to support running multiple workloads and even multiple operating systems on the same hardware has been evolving since the late 1960’s. T...
متن کاملEvaluating a $2M Commercial Server on a $2K PC and Related Challenges
Talk Abstract Many future multiprocessor servers will execute large commercial workloads, such as database management systems and web servers. Thus, simulations of new multiprocessor designs should run these workloads. However, simulating expensive servers running these large workloads on low-cost personal computers presents many challenges. Most of this talk discusses the Wisconsin Multifacet ...
متن کاملLock Behavior Characterization of Commercial Workloads
Commercial workloads such as databases and web servers are the dominant applications running on shared-memory multiprocessors. These multithreaded programs use synchronization mechanisms (often locks) to ensure serialized access of shared data, leading to a potential performance bottleneck. Speculative Lock Elision (SLE) [2] technique has demonstrated that hardware optimization can remove many ...
متن کاملBi-objective optimization of multi-server intermodal hub-location-allocation problem in congested systems: modeling and solution
A new multi-objective intermodal hub-location-allocation problem is modeled in this paper in which both the origin and the destination hub facilities are modeled as an M/M/m queuing system. The problem is being formulated as a constrained bi-objective optimization model to minimize the total costs as well as minimizing the total system time. A small-size problem is solved on the GAMS software t...
متن کاملEvaluating Performance and Energy in File System Server Workloads
Recently, power has emerged as a critical factor in designing components of storage systems, especially for power-hungry data centers. While there is some research into power-aware storage stack components, there are no systematic studies evaluating each component’s impact separately. This paper evaluates the file system’s impact on energy consumption and performance. We studied several popular...
